Vancouver AI Community Lunch Meetup: Fostering Community in Vancouver’s Budding AI Landscape

Vancouver’s tech scene has been steadily growing over the past decade, with artificial intelligence emerging as one of the most dynamic and promising sectors. As someone embedded in the region’s technological landscape, I’m always looking for ways to nurture this growth through community building and open dialogues.

That’s why I was thrilled to participate in the inaugural Vancouver AI Lunch Club, organized by Michelle Ng of Vancouver Foodie Tours. As Michelle emphasized in her opening remarks, the aim of the event was to “bring together bright minds to get informed about AI and just to continue this conversation.” This ethos resonated strongly with me, reflecting my own core philosophies of championing open communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The event’s relaxed, conversational format lent itself perfectly to this goal of sparking an engaging community dialogue. Over lunch at the stylish Jules Bistro, ten folks hailing from diverse professional backgrounds delved into their relationship with AI through a series of introductions and Q&A prompts.

A Snapshot of Vancouver’s Budding AI Community

The eclectic group offered a fascinating snapshot of Vancouver’s nascent yet rapidly developing AI landscape. While some had backgrounds in academia and big tech, others represented local startups and small businesses keen to harness AI’s potential. As Gavin Wilson put it, “the massive hype around AI” has led to a “proliferation of solutions”—presenting both opportunities and challenges for newcomers.

Several speakers mentioned influential figures that have shaped their outlook on AI, like Elon Musk. According to Matthew Heiydt of Backstretch, Musk perfectly captures the exhilarating but arduous nature of entrepreneurship, stating that founders must “stare into the abyss and eat glass.” This resonated with Heiydt’s own experiences navigating the tricky world of startup growth and scaling.

Notably, Backstretch focuses on streamlining recruitment through AI. As Heiydt explained, they handle high-volume hiring for tech companies, having staffed over 200 roles for one client alone. This demonstrated the growing real-world application of AI across the business landscape.

On a similar note, Chad Krolouski of Guest Focus described the overwhelming wealth of customer data accumulated by tour companies like his—presenting a perfect use case for leveraging AI for summarization and analysis. This ability to extract and visualize insights from massive datasets is precisely what makes AI so revolutionary.

Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives on AI

While AI was the common thread linking speakers’ interests, their diverse backgrounds allowed for rich, multi-faceted dialogues on everything from ethics to creativity.

For instance, Muwuso Mkochi of Zapier highlighted AI’s potential to democratize capabilities and opportunities across geographic and socioeconomic boundaries:

“Can anybody be able to use something and have the leverage of the entire universe to get an answer back? A father, a mother that ever had to say, this is the option you should go for…”

This speaks powerfully to my belief in AI’s capacity to uplift marginalized communities when guided by ethical considerations—a crucial topic for ongoing public discourse.

Meanwhile, I shared some of my early explorations in using AI to generate media reflective of my artistic style. By training AI systems on samples of my existing work, I’ve experimented with creating text, images, audio and video that mimic my creative voice.

While still very much a work in progress, this process has been an enlightening foray into AI’s potential to augment and enhance human creativity. The technical complexities involved also reflect the nascence of consumer-facing AI today. Figuring out how to seamlessly “tie the three together” into a convincing digital replica remains an ongoing challenge.

My amateur tinkering provided one perspective on the intersections of technology and creativity. But this event revealed so many more fascinating lenses through which to view AI’s multifaceted impacts across disciplines.

Shared Aspirations in Leveraging AI

While speakers’ AI fluency levels varied enormously, most shared a common interest in discovering its possibilities for their goals. As a prime example, Brent O’Connor from the hospitality sector saw AI as key to unlocking new levels of personalization, efficiency and foresight.

He gave the example of how AI-powered customer data could enable hotels to proactively surprise VIP guests—by automatically sending a congratulatory gift when a deal closes, for instance. This demonstrates AI’s potential to heighten customer satisfaction through customized, predictive interactions.

Hector Rivera, a former academic from Mexico, echoed others’ curiosity, stating that despite initial skepticism, experimenting with AI had piqued his interest tremendously:

“It’s exciting me really. I love that, I prompt and certificates. Just to try… What I [coded manually] around for hours [AI] did in two minutes. So I want to learn AI.”

This infectious spirit of exploration was palpable throughout the discussions, with speakers keen to share research interests and potential collaborations. The enthusiasm surrounding AI’s possibilities seemed tempered by a grounded understanding of its nascence.

Key Takeaways and Ways Forward

One common request was for continued meetups to learn from experts across domains, be it hospitality, photography, consulting, or design. As Reid Robinson of Zapier put it, “Hearing about problems that are difficult to solve” is where he really thrives, given his passion for streamlining workflows.

In this vein, the opportunity for ongoing joint workshops around real-life applications of AI came up frequently—be it for sales automation, data analytics, or administrative assistance. The hands-on, collaborative approach envisioned would neatly align with my own emphasis on community-driven education.

On a personal note, the event left me energized about Vancouver’s prospects in the sector, and eager to nurture this nascent community. Our robust talent pool, thriving startup scene, and ethos of open communication strike me as the perfect ingredients for future success.

With the accelerated pace of technological change, proactive collaboration will be key to developing AI responsibly and harnessing its immense potential. It is through grassroots initiatives like AI Lunch Club that we can steer Vancouver’s budding reputation as an AI hub toward an ethically-grounded, human-centric future. Events like this are just the starting point—but an encouraging one that sparks optimism in what’s to come.
